Linlithgow Photography Club welcomed Kirkcaldy Photographic Society to Longcroft Hall this week for our annual 2-Way Inter Club Competition. Our judge for the evening was award winning wildlife photographer, Stephen Rodger. It was a close run thing and we came within four points of leveling with Kirkcaldy.....there's always next year!
Next Tuesday, 12th March, Linlithgow Photography Club take on Kirkcaldy Photographic Society in the annual 2-Way Inter Club Competition. Each club submits 20 digital images which are then scored out of a possible 20 by an external judge, selected this year by Linlithgow. Doors open at 6.45pm and judging will commence at 7pm with refreshments at the interval.
The Linlithgow Photography Club elves have been working hard puting together meeting dates for 2024 and starting to plan for our 2-Way digital image competition against Kirkcaldy on March 12th. Our last 'indoor' meeting of 2023 is at Longcroft Hall, Tuesday 19th Dec, but we will be heading to Edinburgh for some Christmas Lights photography in the coming days. If you've been thinking about coming along to any of our meetings to see what we do, we'd be delighted to see you.

We have a few things planned for the next couple of months at the club:-
Tuesday 31st - Walk along Linlithgow High St to take more night shots. Meet at The Cross for 7pm.
Tuesday 7th November - Three image discussion evening - any topic. I'll create an album for images to be uploaded into, or Email them to me.
Tuesday 21st November - Angus has very kindly agreed to do a presentation on his travels abroad.
Tuesday 5th December - Another three image discussion evening, the subject of which is Autumn colours/fungi. All images presented should be taken during Autumn 2023 (where possible!) I'll create an album for these neared the time.
*We also plan a trip into Edinburgh to photograph the Christmas lights and a second outing to photograph light trails of trams, date for those will follow soon.
Members had so much fun at their first Light Trails outing it was decided that we should have another go, this time at Lowport roundabout . You can see them on the Photos page by clicking here
Now that the evenings are getting darker, some of us went out to try and capture light trails in the town. It was a fun few hours working out how to get the images to work well. We had plenty of buses to light up the views, together with a Fire Engine and an Ambulance. Everyone got some decent results. You can see them on the Photos page by clicking here
Our group has decided to change our name to the Linlithgow Photography Club. The previous name of Camera Club sounds a little technical, and does not really reflect what we do now. As an informal group, we hope this change will help us attract new members who just like taking pictures and want to learn more about it.
If you're here, you will also have noticed we have taken the chance to spruce up the website. We will be updating this every few weeks, and will use it ourselves for planning events and sharing what we do. If you have any suggestions to make it better - feel free to drop a note to IT@linlithgowphoto.club
Haining Wood Outing
Guest Blogger - Michael Nesbitt - 16/05/2023
A small group of Linlithgow Camera Club members met up at Haining Wood, near Muiravonside Church, on an evening, to take photographs of the Bluebells.
We left Muiravonside Church Car Park, on the banks of the Union Canal, and as we approached Haining Wood the silence was disturbed by the sound of 2-stroke motorcycles using the Woods for scrambling.
We stayed near the entrance to the Woods as we were a bit wary of the motorcycles running about through the Bluebells. We set up our equipment ready to photograph what was left of the flowers, but that seemed to signal to the motorcyclists that it was time for them to spring into action and zoom between us and sometimes over the Bluebells. From the condition of the plants, it looked like this had been happening frequently, as, unfortunately, many of the flowers and leaves had been flattened. Such a shame that these beautiful flowers are being ruined by thoughtless people.
Norma wanted to try close up/ macro photography of the bluebells and ferns. Armed with a Macro lens she plonked herself on the ground to take some photographs. During this exercise she found the impact of limited depth of field when working at small distances from the camera lens to the bluebells. Solution was to use a small aperture and to pick your focus point carefully.
Michael took some general photographs of the Bluebells and provided advice, as needed, to Norma. Michael had been at the woods previously before they were trampled over.
Jackie thought it would be fun to make use of the Motorcyclists riding through the woods and proceeded to practice her panning (moving, or panning, the camera to follow a moving subject whilst using a relatively slow shutter speed) technique.
Terry had a play with an Extension tube to see how closely you can focus for doing close up photography. Extension tubes are much cheaper than a true macro lens but you lose light as a result of using them and your Camera/ lens/ Extension tube combination is unable to focus at infinity (longer distances).
As the light drew to a close we made our way back to Muiravonside Church, having enjoyed our evening out in nice weather conditions.

Well, here goes, my first blog and I certainly have big shoes to fill!
The club springs into competition mode at this time of the year, having had the 2-Way Competition against Kirkcaldy Photographic Society on 20th March. Then, following on soon after, the 3-Way West Lothian Competition against Mid Calder Camera Club and Livingston Camera Club taking place on 5th April.
After a few image selection evening, we chose our 10 Colour Digital and 10 Black & White Digital images giving everyone at LCC a fair chance to have their submissions included. Kirkcaldy PS’s Judge for the evening was very experienced photographer David Sadler – ARPS, DPAGB, EFIAP Gold, BPE4, LBIPP.
Angus, John M, Michael and Terry made the journey to Kirkcaldy to represent our club on the night and Michael did a wonderful job of touch typing all of the judge’s comments and scores for us to go over the following evening at Longcroft.
Well done Kirkcaldy for taking the win with a great score of 358, Linlithgow coming close second with a score of 342…. I think we should be very proud of ourselves for doing so well considering we are just a small club! Our highest score of 19/20 was awarded to Angus Laing for his image ‘Midnight Blue’ and Jackie MacKenzie’s ‘Touchdown’, but we presented a strong set of images so well done to all LCC members. All images, comments and scores will be added to our club website in due course. Fingers and toes crossed for the 3-Way Competition!
Thank you to Mid Calder CC for inviting Livingston CC and Linlithgow CC to their social evening last Wednesday, 15th March. The night consisted of various speakers from each club giving a short talk accompanied by a slideshow of 20 of their best images. Michael represented Linlithgow CC by presenting a very interesting talk about Tilt Shift lenses, this went down very well. Mid Calder also prepared a fun quiz and a delicious buffet…. thanks again for the invite.
Now that the clock has changed, and the weather is threatening to improve, we hope to add a few outings to the programme and also meet outside on the ‘in-between’ Tuesday evenings for some local photo walks. Bluebells and wild garlic will be on the agenda, and there are rumblings of some trips into Edinburgh for some street photography. Lets hope we can add a few outings to the Edinburgh International Festival this year!
Happy snapping
